NEED A TEACHER?

I (Kelvin Hayes) am also an TESOL qualified educator teaching the more cultural side of English. Since 2011 I have taught in China (university), Taiwan (younger learners), Poland (corporate), Austria (middle school) and Switzerland (vocational college). I have also been an exam invigilator at home in Wales and remain open to other possibilities.

In 2016, inspired by Brian Eno‘s Oblique Strategies, I devised nHW (non homework) and nEX (non exam) as a means to alleviate stress in my students who I feel are burdened with too much homework and not enough space to develop their inter-personal skills.

The added intention was to expand their thinking somewhat. In addition I agree with Edward deBono that universities need to be more than just enclosed spaces of knowledge and that thinking should be a subject in its own right.

My ultimate goal would be the option to teach art at foundation level, cultural studies or continue with TESOL (in a class or online setting). SEE BELOW FOR FAQ’s.

Giving a talk to the Travel and Tourism students at SCNU.

WHY SHOULD YOU HIRE ME?

  • I hold a degree in Design and a TESOL certificate.
  • Six years experience in class, mostly at university level. Class sizes 35-120 students!
  • Enhanced DBS Police check (UK, 2022)
  • I believe in further learning and am happy to be police checked and/or medically tested.
  • I am seldom sick and as you can see from the photo below easily adaptable to other countries.

WHY ARE YOU FREELANCE/ONLINE?

I was spending a lot of time applying for jobs where I was expected to hold specific qualifications, or do video intros, demo lessons or some other request which I know from experience are a waste of my time.

Too many schools are fronted by liars – common in TESOL and quite frankly I’m bored of being a ‘candidate’ rather than a valued professional.

In addition I was frequently asked when I was travelling to a city/country and how much I charge by schools who should know what they are going to pay a teacher.

A lot of countries now require notaries and fancy ribbons (apostilles). I see no reason to line the pockets of legal people and prove myself when I have proven myself in China and everywhere else I’ve taught that I can present to a class.

ARE YOU THE BEST TEACHER?

No, but I’m not the worst either and at least I care about my students. I simply require you to be honest, engaged world citizens who of course are prepared to pay for my knowledge and time. I am trying to help you but we all need to eat.

WHAT CAN YOU TEACH?

I teach the cultural side of English: arts, music, film, food, travel but can also teach generic English if required and Inter Cultural Communications.

WHO DO YOU TEACH?

In the main – adults, however I would consider high school age students interested in my niche.

CAN YOU TEACH IELTS?

I am not trained in this area and it would take a lot of research to get up and running, maybe in the future.

WHAT IS YOUR TEACHING STYLE?

Not sure I have one but my aim is to keep students happy and motivated, this is easier in a classroom where I have space to prance about  – some call it edutainment which is fine so long as the student is also engaged and involved. In Switzerland some of my students asked if they could dance or attend an outside event. I allowed both because it was summer, the classroom was hot and also happy students are better students.

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?

I would discuss this with the client but loosely speaking around $20per lesson.

HOW LONG IS A LESSON?

I believe 30-40 minutes is good to avoid info overload but I can do up to an hour if preferred. Any other questions, get in touch.

CONTACT ME

Brexit might have stopped me working in Europe but it can’t stop me working online. This opens up a world of possibilities not just teaching to students from one country. Being online allows me to speak to my students directly. If interested contact me for to discuss your requirements: kelvinhayesglobal(@)gmail.com. No agencies please.

Me and some of my students at SCNU in Guangzhou, easily the best year I had teaching.
