COCK ROBIN: TO THE FAR EDGE OF TIME

Collates my original and popular blogs on this underrated American band into one book. I’ve expanded on some of the themes particularly the song The Promise You Made from which the book takes its title and spoken to some of the musicians that made the work including Peter Kingsbery,

The book also explores Clive Wright’s work with Harold Budd and gives mention to Anna LaCazio’s solo record Eat Life and Peter’s work with Danish DJ Umpff.

TRAVELOGUE:

VOYAGE OF NOMAD

A true story detailing life and events in Europe’s backpackers hostel in the late nineties and early 2000s doing odd jobs in order to travel. Everything from cleaning warships in Portsmouth to staying in legendary Paris bookstore Shakespeare & Co. Similar to Orwell’s Down and Out in London and Paris which I had no idea about at the time. A digital nomad before the term existed. Read an excerpt here, contains some strong language.

YEAR AMID WINTER

Ten years after ‘nomad,’ Winter comprises three parts: OXFORD, AUCKLAND and ISTANBUL and charts my departure from the UK only to find myself in a similar position in New Zealand, hence becoming an English teacher, setting sail for Turkey and a whole new adventure.

HOUSE OF MANY FACES

Written in China and south east Asia between 2011-2017. House of Many Faces details my time as an English teacher in China and my travels within the middle kingdom, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand. Currently at editing stage. I intend there to be a standard and deluxe editions (both ebooks). Expected October 2020.

IBERIA UNKNOWN

Written in Spain from December 2018 up to June 2019. This book details becoming a homeless nomad, my survival and adventures up to my arrival in Gibraltar. If you are a music journalist or English teacher operating in the TESOL world you are only one stop away from the circumstances encountered in this book. Iberia is a sobering account of what awaits should you find yourself homeless and abroad. Currently at editing stage, expected early 2021.

POETRY:

A LYRICAL OASIS

My first book A Lyrical Oasis was released in April 1997. It’s a collection specifically written as a poetry book in that it’s near sequential. Owing much to the art and music that then inspired me (David Bomberg, Cocteau Twins etc), ‘Lyrical’ features some of my most classical pieces like Napier 1982, Still Dance and Like Vorticists and carries many themes: love, politics, seasons and travel. Writing commenced in 1993 and finished in 1996. The book was originally housed in cover art by Japanese artist Shinro Ohtake but as I don’t have legal permission to use it I revised the artwork for this issue. Its enigma is in keeping with that of my second book Notate.

NOTATE

Originally released in October 2000, Notate owes much to the English art musicians such as Brian Eno (Foreshadowed), Robert Fripp (Dark Water) as well as nods to Stan Getz, This Mortal Coil and David Sylvian. Notate features some of my strongest work like Re-dawn, Creating Future Tense and One Thousand Years. The book also has a French flavour (Provence, La Corniche) as it was part written there. Notate serves to the curious a bookmark of where I was at the time and hopefully evokes some beautiful imagery with it.

TERMINAL WANDERLUST

Born out of a visit to Heathrow and written over a few days in London during 2004, Circles and Bumps featured poems named after airport codes: AKL, LAX, LHR and WLG. A decade later I produced volume two Terminal Wanderlust and decided to incorporate the original ‘Circles’ poems to make a two part odyssey. The newer material written between 2011-2014 included DBX and TSA. Dubbed the ‘airport observations of an airpoet,’ some of the poems are available to read here.

NIGHT MUSIC

Night Music collects all my poems inspired by song such as Quiet Night of Quiet Stars (Getz/Gilberto), Foreshadowed (Budd/Eno) and Dark Water, one of several taking its cue from guitar legend Robert Fripp. Included for the first time is Through Glass, my collaboration with Cock Robin singer Peter Kingsbery as well as the three pieces covered by Portuguese musician O Atlas.

DATING THE PAGE (POEMS TRAVEL AND ART 1990-2020)

30 year volume of over 70 poems, artworks and photos – some retouched for this project. Also features contributions from international collaborators and a travelography. Screenshots from this book are available on my blog (search Dating the Page). Expected May 2021
