China: Five Years in a Kingdom of Red

Posted by in Culture, Travel

This December marks five years’ since I first arrived in the middle kingdom. One of the most common questions I get asked by my students is: Why did you come to China?

In short, I had been to Turkey and the school there breached their contract. A friend suggested I teach in Thailand. When I got there the government closed all the schools due to a flood. I was boxed into a corner and had limited funds so China was a happy accident. It has proven sometimes frustrating and always fascinating!

The next most common question is: Where have you been in China? So here is the list so far…

Beijing (2011-2012)
Shanghai (2012 and 2016)
Shenzhen (2012-2013, 2015, 2016)
Fuzhou (2012)
Xiamen (2012)
Guangzhou (2012, 2015-2017)
Foshan (2012 and 2013)
Chenzhou (2014-2015)
Changsha (2015)
Zhuhai (2016)
Kunming (2016)
Nanning (2016)

…also depending on how you look on things… Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Want to read more about my travels in China? Try my book HOUSE OF MANY FACES coming soon.
