A Lyrical Oasis 25

RELEASE HISTORY April 1997 saw the release of my first book A Lyrical Oasis. Self published and with little promo, it sank without trace. Nonetheless, it will always be my first baby even if it was still born and remains pretty much a ghost in terms of release and sales. In 2009 I tried again with an e-book but this met a similar fate. I dare say that in some other world it may have been the pop poem hit I envisaged it to be in my naivety but alas…read more

House of Many Faces

WELCOME TO THE HOUSE Teach English and travel the world! Yeah we’ve all seen the adverts but what is the reality? Usually treading with extreme caution. This one has been difficult to birth due to my business with the blog, nevertheless two years late it is finally time to unleash this latest instalment of my peripatetic life on the world. Written over several years in China and South East Asia, House of Many Faces, continues on from 2012’s Year Amid Winter. Having survived Istanbul, a move to Bangkok is thwarted…read more

The Nordic Theory of Everything

CHINESE DREAM VERSUS FINNISH DREAM In 1997 I had the option of doing my masters degree. Swayed by peer pressure I chose not to and this has proven to be a big mistake (one of many). In China for example, a masters would have provided work in a proper university (rather than the colleges calling themselves universities). A feat I achieved only once and by fluke. The difference in how a teacher is treated in a real university was certainly an eye opener eg trips to spas and private chalets!…read more

A BOOK BORN IN AUTUMN Nostalgia makes the autumn of twenty years ago seem a serenely magical place yet it was if anything fraught with frenetic tension combining nowhere to live, a non-career and turning 30. I was just back from Italy and needed to finish my second book with only four days to do it. I did but was unable to properly promote it.  Looking back it all seems rather strange though I still believed in what I was doing even if ignorance met every release – save Mezzanine…read more

BOMBERG’S DINORA Just looking You can almost smell the sienna. Mystique as musky essence alcoves. Dinora herself transforms into arabesque. This is how the Mona Lisa should have looked No pretensions. Dinora image retouched by KH specifically for this blog. The London ‘musky alcove’ image was taken in Wapping in 2008. Read my other blog on David Bomberg here. Read about Lyrical Oasis here. From A Lyrical Oasis
